In the Vintage Vera Cookbook, Vera Guthrie and her sister Phyllis Salmons wanted to document many of the favorite recipes they grew up on. The way their Mama and Granny used to do it. Coming up with over 180 recipes that include recipe submissions from relatives and friends, as well as a few "easy to make" recipes from Kraft and Campbells "was indeed a trip down memory lane". They even included the canning and preserving recipes that they love.
In this book they remember days and meals gone by. They fondly recall memories of of those that created their favorite culinary delights, their mothers grandmothers, aunts, cousins, and friends.
"They taught us to cook and preserve the bounty of the earth for enjoyment throughout the year".
They say, "Our relative have created many delicious dishes over the years...Mama knew the way we liked certain foods and she went that extra step to please us. Rarely consulting a written recipe, she combined ingredients "until it looks right". One of the many way she showed us her love. You will notice several recipes are listed in memory of our loved one who have passed their special talent to us through their recipes."
Vintage Vera even includes a recipe for lye soap! Now you can make some, even if you don't have a "cement pond" out back like Granny Clampett.
Documenting family recipes is one of the many ways to record pertinent (and tasty) information from family history. Our similarities and differences can help us learn more about each other in this day of the global village. As we age important information is slipping away from us daily. There are people and times (and recipes) that we think we will never forget. How surprising it then, when we haven't thought about a dish in many years and realize we no longer have a clue how to prepare it!
It takes time to document family history (food and otherwise). But it is time well spent, and you will learn a great deal about yourself and others.
